🇩🇪 German meetup Freiburg

Speaking takes courage.Courage takes practice.

Sprachmut is a community for expats in Freiburg who want to get out of their head and into real German conversations: safe, welcoming, and actually fun.

The problem

Speaking is the hardest part for everyone.

You can learn grammar on your own. Speaking, you can't. And when the words won't come, it quickly feels like this:

😶
Stupidbecause the words are missing, even though you actually know it
🤷
Helplessat the office, at the doctor's, in daily life
🚪
Left outof the conversation, the group, the joke
📄
Overlookedat work, even when you're qualified
"Speaking connects. Connection builds language."

That's why we create spaces where this exchange actually happens: with structure, guidance, and no pressure.

What we do

Four ways to practice speaking German with us.

Whether you want to start socializing and get to know the community or jump right into speaking German, there is a place to begin.

🌍
Monday

Social Monday

No language agenda, just people doing something together: games in the park, walks with a view, picnics, cooking together, ping pong. The format changes every time, the good company doesn't.

🎲

Game Night

Conversation games that get you talking before you even notice it's practice. Open to all levels, nobody's just watching from the sidelines.

Sprachcafé with a Language Coach

Organized together with Zusammen Leben e.V.: same spirit as Game Night, but in smaller groups with real feedback from a language coach. All levels welcome.

🍲

Open Kitchen

We cook together, eat, talk, and laugh. Speaking practice that happens on the side while dinner's on the stove.

All events are hosted and guided by native German instructors. No one is going to hit you with Genitiv and Dativ explanations unless you specifically ask. Some people do. You'll always find exact dates on Meetup.

How the events work

We use games to make real conversation easier.

Game Nights and Language Cafés are structured enough to give you a start, but loose enough that it still feels like a real evening with people.

What kind of games can you expect?

We choose games by energy and level, so you can warm up gently or jump into more spontaneous speaking when you are ready.

Warm-up
Bingo, quick introductions, four corners, getting into a line by age, distance, languages, or shoe size.
Easy
Memory, Wer bin ich?, easy Taboo, word relay, simple prompts that get everyone talking.
Medium
Icebreaker questions, dilemma cards, Scattergories, two truths and one lie, pantomime, story chains.
Hard
Guessing idioms, weird German words, extreme Taboo, short sales pitches, absurd fun facts.
Inclusive by design

Every event is built so people can actually join in.

Depending on the format and activity, we make sure even people with zero experience are taken care of: with clear structure, the right groups, and support before things get awkward.

Level badges

Visible from the start

Name tags with language levels make it clear who is practicing, who can help, and where conversations can start comfortably.

Matched activities

Games for different levels

Different games and conversation formats fit different levels. Nobody has to struggle through tasks that are still too far away.

Buddies & coaches

Targeted support

We are testing buddy pairs between beginners and advanced learners, and bringing in more coaches so beginners always have dedicated support.

Real moments

And this is how it looks.

A few glimpses of hikes, game nights and shared meals with the Sprachmut community.

"I had stopped going to Sprachcafés in Freiburg because they were too chaotic for me and I didn't end up talking much. This was different. I think the moderation and interesting topics beyond 'where are u from' made a big difference. Please again soon."
